Meet the Valtruis Summer Interns
At Valtruis, we believe the future of healthcare depends on the people bold enough to reimagine it. That’s why we’re committed to mentoring and developing rising talent, offering hands-on opportunities at the intersection of investing, technology, and care transformation. This summer, we’ve brought on three interns who are each bringing their unique perspective, curiosity, and capabilities to our mission.
Courtney Fondufe | MBA Intern, University of Chicago Booth School of Business
A rising second-year MBA candidate at Booth, Courtney is diving deep into the core of our investment work.
Her summer focuses on diligence support, modeling, market research and thesis development in areas like AI enablement and revenue cycle management, and identifying synergistic assets that can accelerate growth across our portfolio.
Courtney’s decision to pursue an MBA was driven by her interest in the intersection of investing and care delivery operations within healthcare. “I see value in dedicating two years to building the skills, clarity, and network needed to determine whether I’m best suited to this work as an operator, a hands-on investor, or in a strategic role,” she said.
When asked what she would fix in healthcare, Courtney highlighted a persistent challenge: high member churn in health insurance. “It perpetuates a system of short-term thinking and reactive care,” she shared. Solving it, she believes, would unlock longer-term, value-based innovation.
Fun fact: Courtney is co-authoring a Cameroonian cookbook with her mom.
Paul Kim | Undergraduate GenAI Intern, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Paul, a rising senior studying Computer Science and Economics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, is helping us push the boundaries of how AI can enhance our investment workflows.
He’s developing AI-driven modules that automatically extract and analyze insights from a wide range of data sources, along with automation tools to streamline market research and competitive analysis. A key focus of his work involves using foundation model APIs to process complex datasets, surfacing patterns, identifying trends, and supporting data-informed decision-making across the investment process.
He’s especially excited about the potential for AI to uncover patterns in large datasets (regulatory filings, clinical data, and market research) that would otherwise remain buried. “There’s so much valuable information that AI can help synthesize more comprehensively,” Paul explained.
Outside of Valtruis, Paul is developing a plugin that helps users write more effective prompts for large language models, a project inspired by research showing significant gaps between how most people prompt models and what's actually possible.
Fun fact: Paul has visited 15 national parks (and counting!).
Jess Benattar | Undergraduate Intern, Bucknell University
Jess, a rising senior studying Political Science at Bucknell University, has spent her summer immersed in the competitive dynamics shaping our portfolio companies and the broader healthcare ecosystem.
Her work includes mapping competitors across multiple dimensions and building infrastructure maps that track technologies used by payors and providers.
What surprised her most about healthcare? She noted “How interconnected and complex the system is, and how much strategic and operational thinking happens before care is even delivered.”
Through her exposure to healthcare and venture investing, Jess has strengthened her analytical skills and gained a deeper understanding of what matters most when evaluating companies. “It was especially interesting to understand how investors think about positioning, differentiation, and market opportunities, and how much insight you can gain just by analyzing specific competitors within a sector.”
Fun fact: Jess is a goalkeeper on Bucknell’s women’s soccer team.
Thank you Courtney, Paul, and Jess for the energy, insight, and ambition you have brought to our work this summer! We can’t wait to see what you do next.
